Sassy Steves

Sassy Steves

As many of you know, my dad was diagnosed with multiple myeloma back in 2014, shortly after my mom was cleared of her breast cancer. It was hard to wrap my head around one cancer diagnosis in a year, let alone two. Needless to say, 2014 was a tough year for my family and a true test of our faith but we made the most of the cards we were dealt and played our best hand possible.

For about 3.5 years, both mom and dad were as healthy as ever – my dad had successfully completed his stem cell transplant in 2015 and my parents celebrated their health and love for one another in Hawaii (and also became proud grandparents to the cutest grandsons they could ask for). All ducks were back in a row!

And then, after my dad had a pain in his leg that he just couldn’t shake, we received the news we were all dreading to hear. The multiple myeloma was back.

Just like before, my dad’s positive attitude and ability to “not sweat the small stuff” gave him the strength and motivation to fight this disease yet again (for those keeping score, Dad-2, Cancer-0). He completed another round of radiation therapy in 2017 and has been successfully receiving immunotherapy ever since. Luckily, my dad has experienced little to no side effects from the immunotherapy (aside from his weekly dose of sassiness he gets from the accompanying steroid, hence the new team name) and says he actually enjoys going in for the treatment every two weeks since he gets to relax, watch TV, and be served snacks – leave it up to him to find the silver lining!

By running in this race, I am not only showing love and support for my dad and all that he has been through but also raising money to help find a cure for this disease. Please join me in supporting this great cause as I give back to the doctors, nurses, and researchers who help my dad and many other multiple myeloma patients every day. As my dad’s shirt says, you have to “live every day like it’s NE-3 and ATL-28 (with 2:08 left in the 3rd)” and never give up.

Thank you!
